WEST COAST OPTIMISM

GOLDFIELDS ACTIVITY GISBORNE VISITOR’S VIEWS A great; degree of optimism and business activity are apparent on the West Coast of the South Island, according to Mr John Jackson, who returned to Gisborne last night after a visit to Reofton and Hokitika. People in those parts, he .said, appeared more hopeful than in some .other places -in the Dominion. * The search for gold was helping iu this pleasing outlook, lie added. Large numbers of inch .were, engaged in the work, and from his observations most were at least making wages, while all worked with the hope of striking, it. rich. Numbers were working under assistance obtained from the Unemployment BoUrd, but others wore proceeding on their own account. All were working cheerfully, and while they were .seeking to unearth some of the untold, wealth which they believed was still hidden hencatii the ground they were securing sufficient in most cases to make their ventures worth while. Timber mills also appeared to he ■fairly busy, and while Jie was in the district he saw some ships loading timber. The coal mines were not quite so busy, hut he believed the co-opera-tive mines were doing very well. All this activity had a direct effect on business in general, and wherever lie ■went on the West Coast he found a greater degree of activity and hopefulness limn that which lie felt fin Gisborne.
