HAIVKRA. this day. ‘ Tho condition of Mr. William James Carradus, a relief worker, who was shot from ambush at his residence in Paten, £ on Thursday night, is reported to be ’ serious. The opinion, is expressed that the 3 attack on Mr. Carradus was the result of a series of premeditated attempts, as on two successive nights the garden gate llnd been propped open as though to | afford a clear getaway for the intruder. Mr. Carradus, with his wife and child, ' oqcnpy looms at Mrs Lawson’s residence. About 8 o'clock on Thursday night Mrs. Lawson heard a knock at tile door, but ’ found no one there. Mr. Carradus at, ’ the time was having a hath prior to J retiring. About five minutes after ho 1 had retired Mr. Carradus heard another [ knock, and went to tho door, lmt could J see. no one. He then walked to the side ; of the house, but as it was quite dark lie had little chance of seeing anyone. ' He llieu walked towards the back door, ami just as lie reached the doorstep a shot rang out. Mr. Carradus fell on the doorstep with his left leg badly shattered about tho kneo. As he fell lie saw someone wearing a slouch hat running away. Mr. Carradus was removed to hospital, where he was operated upon. The gun used, a fowling piece, was fired at point blank range, the shot inflicting .terrible injuries, the flesh being blown away aha the bone shattered. The overcoat which Mr. Carradus had on at the time has a large hole in tho side about the size of a man’s fist, where the shot ■
