IRISH CONTROVERSY

DE VALERA’S STATEMENT

JUST CLAIMS REJECTED

DUBLIN. Oct. 19,

The opening of the Dail was preceded by a “hunger march’’ of 2000 unemployed.

Mr. lie Valera, reviewing the London negotiations, said that ns they meant to see n: it was possible to re a. comprehensive settlement of future relations, he had advanced claims which should be advanced whenever there was a question of arriving at an ultimate financial settlement. The discussions showed that the British Government was not prepared to admit Ireland’s claims to justice. “Possibly,” lie said, “if we had gone in the role of beggars, with out lints in our hands asking for consideration and charity, there might liavn been a disposition to make minor modifications in some mitigation of our claims, but simple justice they were not prepared to concede. They take the stand of the inviolability of the secret documents of 1928 and 192(1, and refuse to budge from them.” Mr. Do Valera read a passage from Mr. Thomas’ statement, and said he concluded that the present. British Government was pressed forward by certain anti-Irish feeling in Britain, supported liv the attitude of a minority in tho Free State.
