USE OF FERTILISERS

NEED FOR INVESTIGATION DOMINION-WIDE SURVEY (For Press Association.) WELLINGTON, last night. The Prime Minister announces that an important reorganisation has taken place with regard to soil survey, involving the co-ordination of the activities of the various branches of the service and the co-operation of the Cawthron Institute. During the past few years, investigations have revealed the fundamental importance of the field work of the Geological Survey in connection with soil formation and changes in soil. Moreover, the work has shown the necessity of linking up manurial response trials with the soil types on which these trials have been made, so as to indicate more correctly tho areas over which proved types of: manurial response are applicable. Accordingly, the soil survey branch of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research has been formed, to work under the general direction of the secretary of the Research Department, the ' nssistant-Director-Genernl of Agriculture, Mr Rigg of the Cawthron Institute, and the Director of Geological Survey, and the workers of these various branches will be coordinated as one team. The work so far in the volcanic shower areas of tho North Island, and the soil survey undertaken by the Native Department, has indicated .several general fundamental factors, and a start will be made on ils application to more intensive areas (a start is being made in Waikato), gradually extending to other areas in both islands. The full work will take some years to complete, but. it is considered of fundamental importance in tho economic use of fertilisers nnd intensive farming generally.
