‘DIFFICULT & DANGEROUS’

UNEMPLOYMENT REMEDY MR. J. S. JESSEP’S COMMENTS 'The possibility of the remedy for unemployment being dangerous was expressed by Mr J. S. Jessep, aetingehairman of the Unemployment Board, in a letter to the 'Poverty Bay subpro vim-ial executive of the Farmers’ Union, which met to-day. .This information was given in a reply- to a letter from the executive assuring Mr Jessep of the executive’s support in his efforts. Mr Jessep’s letter read: “I must appreciate your letter of 31st inst., assuring me of the support of your branch of the Farmers’ Union in 'connection with the relief of unemployment. The 'problem before the country in connection with solving unemployment is an exceedingly diflicult, and maybe dangerous, one. Whilst satisfying the need for relief in necessitous eases, we must be careful to guard against undermining the stamina and character of the people. The present condition of unemployment is bad in itself, but it would be infinitely worse from the national standpoint if the men concerned throughout the Dominion, settled down to the relief standard of living and lost ail personal incentive to seek normal employment.” The letter was received.
