William Doyle, who served for 23 years in the Cambridge police and fought in the South African and Great Wars, was sentenced to five years’ penal servitude for burglary and larceny. It was revealed that lie had lived a .Jekyll and Hyde existence for the past two v ears. He was a zealous constable in the daytime, and a systematic burglar at nights. He used a police set of duplicate keys ostensibly to examine and piotect business premises, but instead stole wine, women’s clothing, wireless sets, watches, and money. It was only just discovered that the fingerprints found afto£ a burglary in 1930 were Doyle’s. Several innocent assistants had been suspected of Doyle's crimes.
