FOOT-AND-MOUTH DISEASE

CATTLE BREEDERS’ VIEWS A discussion on foot-and-mouth disease took place at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Polled Angus Cattle Breeders’ Association held in Dannevirke. Mr. W. A. McFarlane, Hastings, was re-elected president. Mr, Charles Matthews, Gisborne, was also present. The meeting discussed the recommendation from the council regarding the lifting of the embargo on the importation of stock from Great Britain. The council recommendation was: That this council supports the introduction of stock from Great Britain, provided the Agricultural Department agrees that such action is sate and advisable.

There was a difference of opinion in the meeting on the matter, and it was finally agreed to postpone arriving at a decision until the next meeting of the council in February, in Dannevirke, by which time it was expected further information—which was at present being sought by the authorities-—would be available.

“There is very little to gain but a lot to lose if we ever allowed foot-and-mouth disease to enter this country,” emphatically declared Mr. J. E. Hewitt.
