WHALE AND SHIP COLLIDE
NEW LONDON, Conn., Aug. 30
A 100 ft coastguard boat limped towards Boston bar for repairs to-day after it came out second best in an encounter with a whale.
The Wood, a 1000-ton flush deck craft, sighted the whale on Saturday night. The mammal, apparently 90ft. long, swam directly toward the Wood, and a head-on collision seemed imminent. Just before the Wood struck it, the whale flopped over on its back and tried to dive under the boat. The whale struck the vessel with a terrific impact, bending one propeller and damaging a turbine. No trace of blood or sign of the whale could be seen when the Wood reconnoitred.
