SURPRISES UNLIKELY
TARIFF ADJUSTMENTS NO MAJOR ALTERATIONS (Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. Although the proposed tariff alterations are' being kept' a closely-guarded secret, there is every reason to believe that there will be no great surprises when the resolutions appear before the 1 louse'to-moiTow night.. In fact, there is support for a belief that the main feature will he tlie removal of the surtax of 9/40ths on all United Kingdom imports.' This concession is expected to deplete the customs revenue to the extent of £250,000, hut it will, no doubt, be held that this will he made up by increased ' importations, ■ resulting - from greater consumption under the lowered retail prices. 1
It, is understood that the reductions in existing duties which the resolutions will propose will be quite insignificant, and that tlie range of items affected will be surprisingly limited. Speculation points to duties being reduced on wearing apparel, silk stockings, and. perhaps, such items as ground coffee and spices.
