Record Dairy Yields
HAIRY farming was a business, said Mr. G. It. Herron, president of tlie Southland and Otago Herd-Testing Association at the annual meeting, and the slump was teaching the farmers to work on business lines. It had been found that tho man who farmed properly with, a properly tested herd liad nothing to fear, and in proof of this there were'herds in Southland returning £2O per cow at present prices. „ Mr. Herron went on to refer to record yields secured in Southland, and quoted an instance where one of the directors of the association had established a Dominion record through careful testing. This herd had returned £114.8 at Is per lb butter-fat during the last year, and that was a remarkable return from a small herd oh a small area of land. Tlio way some of the herds were improving was wonderful, Mr. Herron said. A few years ago a herd of 71 cows that would average 3001 b, of butter-fat would have been a record, one, but there was a herd of that number in Southland which had averaged 3901 b. In addition to that, one of the cows running with this herd had secured the third highest record in the Dominion. Another record had been established by Mr. li. Anderson, of Stirling.
