BRILLIANT SPECTACLE

MILAN, July 18,

'Tho 354-year-,old Festival of the Redeemer was celebrated at Venice during the week-end. On Saturday evening gondolas and boats of every description, decorated with green leaves and .Illuminated by lamps and gaily-colored Venetian lanterns, thronged the canals. Most of them carried musicians and singers. In the palaces lining the Grand Canal very few windows were unlighted ami ■rich tapestries hung from the balconies. The ships of tho British squadron lying in the lagoon had been •outlined in lamps. Tho bridge of boats which is always thrown across the Giudecea Canal to provide easier access to the Church of the Redeemer drew crowds of sightseers, and the evening was brought to a close by a firework display.
