TO UNDERMINE BANKS
COMMUNIST PLOT ‘ * WHISPERING ’ ’ CAMPAIGN (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Received Julv 29, 11 a.in.) CHICAGO, .July 28. What appears to have been a nationwide plot to undermine the banks is revealed by Federal agents who raided tho hotel room of George Rowland, an alleged Communist, at Pontiac, Mich:gan, and found a number of documents detailing a “whispering campaign” against the banks throughout the middle west. It is understood that the technique of the so-called Communists consisted of clandestinely telephoning heavy depositors and declaring that various banks were unsafe, and expected to close. It is believed that such tactics were responsible for heavy withdrawals in Juno from a number of Chicago banks, many of which failed.
