NO PLAY IN TRIAL INDIANS HAVE A DRAW (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Received July 29, II a.m.) LONDON, July 28. There was no play to-day in the test trial match owing to rain. India in the first innings made 101, Allen taking five for 32. Northumberland in the first scored 143. India in tho second put on 138 for eight and declared. Northumberland in the second lost two for 45. The match was drawn. POOR SPORTSMANSHIP SURREY UNDER FIRE LONDON, July 20. Mr. J. C. Allom, who captained Surrey in the absence of Jardine, is strongly criticised for failing to compel Lancashire to follow on, wiien 164 runs behind Surrey. Tho Manchester Guardian's writer, “Cricketer,” Mr. Neville Oardus, dubs it as “unexampled poor sportsmanship,” and remarks, “The shabbiness of the outlook killed tho match.
“If cricket were ruled by an organisation comparable with the English Football Association, thero would be an inquiry and suspensions. “Surrey Had a reasonable chance of victory, and could not lose, but made no effort to win, indeed, did not seem to want to win. An explanation is duo from the Surrey committee.” Tho Daily Mail says:—“Surrey, whether led by Jardine or Allom, appears to think* that any sign of enthusiasm, any endeavor to win, any suggestion that things should bo done in. a hurry simply is not done. Allom played into * the hands of tho cricket revolutionaries ” On the the contrary, the dashing cricket of Gloucester against Warwick bn Tuesday, is quoted, There were 18 sixes, Dacre hitting six and scoring 87 in an hour.
