(Herald C'orresjiomlont.) During June rain fell in Matawai uu nine clays, tbo total fall being 4.12 in. In the Koranga Valley rain fell on 12 days The heaviest fall was 2.16i0. on June 16. The total for the month was 13.5 in. Matawai won the basketball match last week against Motuliora bv 17 to 9. Thursday's match was played at Motu, Matawai being the visitors. The scores were Motu 18, Matawai 12. The weekly euchre tournament took place in tbo Stadium last night. Mrs. Lynch won tbo ladies’ prize and Mr. G. Montgomery the gentlemen’s.
Twenty years ago sartorial experts would have looked askance at a man who attended a society ball or a musical evening attired in anything but full evening dress. To-day, however, says a Christchurch exchange, “the old order changeth, giving place to the new.” A man now takes his social pleasures dressed in a dinner suit and the swallowtailed coat has fallen into disfavor, so much so that when worn it is conspicuous. This change in men’s dress was most marked at tlio charity ball in Christchurch last week. Virtually the only men wearing full evening dress were the members of the official party and the majority of the debutantes’ escorts.
