RUATORIA MEWS
( (Herald Correspondent.) A largo number of natives from the district left for the fishing grounds north of Hicks Bay about a week ago, and, although the weather was against the excursion, a very enjoyable lime was spent. There were 24 excursionists and the accommodation in the caves was ample. Now that the mold are prevalent and the wind in the right quarter, it .w surmised that a record catch will be obtained. The natives, after catching the fish, cure, and smoke them, and have usually sufiicient to Jtide them over the winter. A few ’who had to return home, had an exciting -experience on Tuesday, when, after leaving the port, they set sail, ;gind, the wind being too strong, they were driven out to sea. The sail was hauled in and the crew just managed 1o reach the shore after some strenuous Vowing. .. . The Rnatoria Rugby football team will meet the Matakaoa representatives in Saturday to p |n y for the Hem Houkamau Memorial Cup- The public are certain to witress a good panic us 'both unions are desirous of holding the 'trophy, which is at present held by the Matakaoa representatives. There is sure to be, a large number of supporters from Ruatoria.
