NEW YORK “GRAFT”
PAYMENTS TO MAYOR MR, WALKER QUESTIONED NEW YORK, May 25. Following on almost daily hearings for many months of charges of graft in the administration of the affairs of New York city, Mr. Samuel Seabury, who is the leader of the investigations, produced a sensation to-dky by calling Uic Mayor, Mr. Walker, to stand. Hi* asked him to explain a.large letter of credit which representatives of a concern that sought a city franchise purchased for the Mayor’s European trip in 1927, and 246,000 dollars, profit which the Mayor drew from a stock brokerage account which a noted New York publisher maintained without expense to Walker. Five thousand persons attempted to enter the chamber, which seated only 300. Mr. Seabury and Mr. Walker exchanged very bitter personalities. Order was maintained only with difficulty. The. Mayor offered little in the way of explanation. At one point he demanded to know whether . Mr. Seabury was intimating that the letter of credit was “a matter of a bribe,” and the latter replied, "It looks very suspicious.” . . , r , The hearing almost degenerated into an open brawl when a considerable number of Tammany henchmen gained admittance to the chamber and became abusive. . An interesting aspect of the situation it/ the announcement that the Federal Government is making inciuiries into Mr. Walker’s income tax payments.
