FAMOUS BOW BELLS

RESTORATION OFFER LONDON, April 22. Mr. Gordon Selfridge, the department store owner, is believed to be the anonymous man who has offered to pay for the restoration of the famous bells of St. Mary-le-Bow Church in Chcapside, one of Sir Christopher Wren’s masterpieces. These bolls, which, according to legend, called Dick Whittington to become Lord Mayor, have now been silent many rears. Their preservation would have been impossible but for Mr. Selfridge’s gift, which is understood to be about £SOOO. The church authorities arc still seeking £6OOO more for urgent repairs to the steeple roof, walls and organ of what they describe as “the most famous parish church in England.”
