WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

MONTHLY MEETING AT MANUTUKE Tim Alanutuko Women s Institute held its monthly meeting ii« the institute s hall, and there was a good attendance of members. Owing to the absence through illness of the president, Mrs. J |{. ]*ead, Mrs. Claude Hamilton, vicepresident, presided. The meeting opened with the singing of the institute song, with Mrs. W. A. McCiiskio presiding at the piano. After a brief discussion it was decided that no delegate would he sent to the annual Dominion conference this year. Nominations for the federation executive were taken. Airs, James l’irie was appointed Manutuke delegate to attend the Poverty Bay federation’s annual council meeting, to be held on .Friday in the Y.M.C.A. rooms. A suggestion that a ilower show be held in the Manutuke institute hall on April 21 was approved, and Airs. Buckley, convenor of the gardening circle, will he in charge. It was announced that a trade table would he in operation at.the federation meeting, and donations of fruit and vegetables wouid he welcomed. The programme for next meeting will include a talk by Mrs. Tiffen; musical selections; roll call, “my pet aversion and my greatest pleasure,” while the competition will be “Best bottle of pickles,” accompanied by the recipe. Airs. Taylor was ’ appointed competition secretary, and Mrs. Jones commission table secretary.

Following general business, Ah's. N. Hooper gave an interesting dornonstra turn of basket-making from raffia, pineneedles, and matting fibre. A vote of thanks to the demonstrator was passed Owing; to the omission of the roll-call in the previous month through the annual general meeting, it was decided to take a dual roll-call, “recipes” and ‘‘mottoes.” and the result was gratifying.

The month’s competition brought forth some beautiful samples of woo) embroidery, and when the vote was takeiq Airs 11. Sutton proved the winner, with Mrs W. A. Smith, second, and Airs F. It. Hill, third.

After the tea hostesses, Mcsdamcv. Buckley and Sutton, had served a delicious afternoon tea, a charming tribute to the work of the ret iring secretary was paid. Airs. Claude Hamilton, on behalf of members, presented Airs W. A. Mc.CJiskio with a handsome beaten brass tray, and the gift was accompanied by the heartiest appro elation of the recipient's untiring and splendid work for the institute during her term of office. In returning thanks, Mrs McGTisJdc said that although she had resigned the secretaryship she would always be there to help whenever her services were needed.

The meeting room was beautifully decorated with choice cactus dahlias of immense size in tones of yellow, bronze, red, and gold, while vases of mixed tunings also added their quota of beauty to the scene.
