MOCK FIGHT AT SEA
WARSHIP DIOMEDE “SUNK”
“BOMBED” WITH BAGS OF FLOUR
Officially, the 11.A1.5. Diomede, which arrived at Sydney from New Zealand on .March 14 for the Harbor Bridge celebrations, is “a sunken enemy vessel.” The Diomede steamed direct across the Tasman until late on the afterneon of March 13, when sealed orders were opened. These informed lifer that she was. to pose as an enemy cruiser in the track of shipping, arid attack the Australian Squadron which was supposed to be convoying merchantmen from Hobart to Sydney. The Diomede and the Australian Squadron, comprising the Canberra, Australia, Albatross, and Tattoo, met on the coast ou the morning of March 14, and waged battle.
Seaplanes from the Albatross dropped “bombs” represented by bags of fiotir around the Diomede. So that the decks would not be littered and officers’ uniforms damaged, the bags were dropped just clear of the cruiser.
The Diomede was officially sunk. The ships exchanged greetings, and went on to Sydney in company.
