WAIOEKA NEWS

(Herald Correspondent.)

Waioeka was en fete last Saturday for the opening of the Oparto bridge. Dull , threatening weather during the morning gave place to a delightfully mild afternoon. The opening ceremony took place at 2 p. 111., Mr. Reid, chairman of the Upotiki County Council, and councillors, journeying from Upotiki for the event. Mr. licid was called upon to officiate. In a humorous speecli Mr. Reid stressed tljo benefit the. new bridge would bo to the settlers of the district, at the same time-reminding his hearers that the date .of the Oporto bridge opening coincided with that of the 'Sydney bridge, although he had iio .doubt that the Waioeka settlers felt that their bridge was of most importance. Mr. Reid then called upon Mrs. Rcdpath, as oldest settler in the district, to cut the ribbon, which she did amidst much applause. Little lonia Mearl presented Mrs. Redpath with a beautiful bouquet from the ladies of the district.

An adjournment was made to the school lawn, where a- delectable afternoon tea was served upon daintily decorated tables. About 200 guests partook of the dainty repast, after which they wandered about in tho school garden and grounds, admiring the beautiful flowers and native bush.

Great credit is duo to Mrs. A. J. Macrae, lion, organising secretary, and her band of willing helpers for a much enjoyed afternoon, guests expressing the hojxi that another such function would he held in the near future. The workers committee comprised Mesdames W. Rcaufoy, G. Donnelly, C. Owen, S. Mead, and Messrs. Mead, Alan Gellert, A. J. Macrae, G. Donnelly and J. Rcdpatli.
