INDIAN PRIEST’S CRIME

lIINDU-MOSLEM CLASH

CALCUTTA, March, 15. Muthaswaniy, temple priest, of Somavarampatti, in the Madras Presidency, has been sentenced to transportation for life for having rmp’derpd his only sun, aged 11, by offering him as a sacrifice to Kali, the Hindu Goddess of Destruction. . . . .

Muthaswaniy told the police that, fearing that the goddess was displeased at the villagers’ failure to celebrate their annual festival in her honor, he cut his sou’s throat, and poured the blood before the idol, hoping thus to save the villagers from the- wrath of the goddess. The police narrowly averted a grave clash between Hindus and Moslems at Cawnpore, after the recent murder‘of a Hindu child by a Moslem, and rumors of the kidnapping of Moslem children by Hindus. Crowds from both communities attacked each other with stonps and sticks* and were separated only after repeated police baton charges. Four young Lahore students have been arrested in connection witli a revolver attack on two Indian merchants, both of whom were wounded. The assailants unsuccessfully attempted to seize money, which, it is believed, would have boon used to finance further revolutionary activities in India.
