ARCHITECT’S SUCCESS

WASHINGTON, Oct. 17. Mr. J. L. Cleave, of Nottingham', lias won the prize of £2OOO offered by the Pan-American Union for the best plans for a memorial lighthouse to bo erected in honor of Columbus at San Domingo. Mr. ’Gloavo’s plan was selected by the judges, who sat at Rio do Janeiro, becnitso of its simple linos and ils provision for stability against earthquakes. Tile competition was open to architects all over the world, and the jury consisted of an American, an Uruguayan, and a Finn. They had to make their Selection from the finalists, who camo from Great Britain, the United States, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. The decision, which was announced hero this morning, carried the right of tho architect to supervise the construction of the lighthouse.
