TRANS-CANADA ROAD
LINKING PROVINCES 3500-MILE PROJECT TORONTO, Oct. 10*. One of. the most picturesque roads in the world is to be constructed through the Rocky Mountains, in the course oi‘ linking up existing east-and-wost highways in Canada to form a surfaced motor road from the Atlantic coast to the Pacific. Instituted primarily as an unemployment relief project, with Federal and provincial governments dividing the cost, the transCanadian highway will open up to the motor tourist much beautiful country and magnificent scenery.
In Eastern Canada the trans-Canada highway largely will follow existing provincial roads, and the principal new construction will be in Northern Ontario and in the Western provinces. From Winnipeg westward the route goes to Regina and Calgary, entering the Rockies at Banff and proceeding by way of Revelstoke and Kamloops to Vancouver.
Canada, at the latest- computation, had 31)4,372 miles of public road open to traffic, of which more than 80,000 miles were surfaced —35.000 miles in the latter classification being in Ontario. It lias been estimated that more Ilian £1.80,000,000 is invested in Canadian highway systems, and expenditures lust year were £15,000,000 while maintenance, cost £4,800,000. The Dominion has, one licensed motor vehicle to each eight of its population of .10,000,000 persons.
