Two hundred and forty-one ri<-iir-cd persons, constituting the Inst hand of the notorious criminal organisation, the Mafia, will ho tried on Monday at tho local assizes. All the defendants will be handcuffed, and will sit in a huge iron cage throughout the trial. Tlic' Mafia is now virtually crushed as a result of the merciless campaign by Signor Mussolini, who had promised to free Sicily of tho criminals who had blackened her good name by oppressing its'4,ooo,ooo peaceable citizens. Among the charge* are associating together for criminal purposes, holdnp3. highway robberies, killing livestock, "arson,'blackmail. and murder. Some arc also accused of t hreat onto vtrang girls for the purpose of compelling them to marry unwanted suitors or-to break engagements with loved sweethearts. The persons who. have brought the complaint* under which tho charges i:i are framed number 140, while the witnesses total several hundred, with about 100 lawyers taking part.
