CALM IN IRELAND
WHAT DOES IT INDICATE ? PEACE OR COMING STORM (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Received Oct. 28, 10 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 27. The News-Chronicle’s Dublin correspondent states that calm prevails throughout the Free State, but people every when> are wondering whether this heralds a new era of peace or whether the gunmen are merel.v lying low. It is admitted that since the new Public .Safety Act 1 was' passed dot a single violent incident- lias occurred, hut il is pointed out that Air. (Josgrave thus far has confined himself to proclamations and warnings, and that ,ie Irish Republican Army is still fully armed. It is therefore asked whether the Act is having the desired result, or whether, as Mr. Dc Valera suggested, it is merely driving the revolutionary element further underground.
Well-informed circles fear a serious outbreak if the Government attempts to act with undue severity.
