HOPES NOT REALISED
PROGRESS IN THE HOUSE YESTERDAY’S PROCEEDINGS (Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. Expectations that substantial progress would be made with the estimates in the House yesterday were not realised, only eight classes, the majority of which were of more or less minor importance, being passed. The main items disposed of were the votes for the Health Department, Mental Hospitals Department, Customs Department, and State Advances Office. To-day the House will deal with the Stamp Duties Amendment Bill, introduced last night, which gives effect to the main budget proposals for the taxation of steamer tickets and the proceeds of art unions. The Hon. W. Downic Stewart explained to the House that it was necessary to get this legislation through as quickly as possible as “revenue was being lost every day.”
Other Government bills on the order paper, including the Hawke’s Bay Land Registration Bill and the Air Navigation Bill, will also be proceeded with.
