Mivtawai last Thursday evening, Tears;-were entertained for his safety. -Hoehad left ‘earlier in the duy on a hunting trip into that bush at tlie- back of (Major Riddick’s station; and took the wrong ridge. Having deft his horse, and coat, with his .tobacco,: and 1 matches, he .spent a-miserable night in . the bush. Some-of the Motu Valley road settlers, formed a- search,party, and j were leaving early next rtiorning when word came through that'Mr. Grealbach had arrived at Messrs. Gordon and Armstrong’s homestend on the Waioeka road. The Matawai Junior Ci-icket Club.held it's inaugural ball on Friday in the Public Hall. A very-happy time was spent, by the juniors, the chaperons being ' Me»* dames Hifstler. Trengrove, Jacobs; , and .Morgan. Mr. T. Trengrove made a very efficient M.C., and introduced many old-.-..' time dances into the programme. The music> was ( supplied gratuitously by Alesdames Mehrtens,; Misses' Trengrove and Blomquist. A good supper was provided by tne juniors, i Mr. and Mrs. J. Beil, of Quirk’s mill, entertained -a party of' tin-canners, including. friends from Motuhora, Matawai and Gisborne. on'Saturday evening. The. Matawai Tennis Club held, its opening on Saturday. - The tournament commenced at 11 n.m., but only two, rounds had been, played when showers drove all to-the shelter of t-tl’e pavilion. ' After afternoon tea. was served, another attempt was made to finish the games, hut the weather provirjg too changeable, play was abandoned. ’
