CLOSING OF LINE FEARED The rcccnt*istatement of the goneral manager of railways that the failure of the public to use adequately the branch lines that -served their districts. would be taken as an indication that they did not want them resulted in a public meeting being held at Waiuku on Friday at the invitation of the Railway Protection League, states the Auckland Herald. Mr. A. W. Wellsted, business agent for the Railways Department, gave tho meeting information' regarding the working of the line. It was decided to recommend to theRailways Board the discontinuance of the passenger service and by so. doing largely reduce the running costs. The amount that would be saved by taking this course was variously stated as ranging from £!»00 to £I4OO annually. General concern was expressed at the prospect of the possibility of the line being closed and steps are to be taken (o induce fanners and business people to make use of it to a greater extent than at present.
