Justice llerdman for sentence to-day on five charges of false pretences. Her counsel said that at ono stago of her career she avus involved in a case of a notorious nature, and that had been dogging licr for many years. She Avas hoav destitute and in poor health. Some years ago she married a man who turned out a drunkard and a gambler, and eventually he returned to his iKitivo country. At all times she had to support herself. The Salvation A>'"iy had offered to care for her if tho court Avould grant probation. The judge said tho prisoner had kept out of trouble since 1909, and had been a trusted domestic servant. Ho xvas unable to understand lioav she had lapsed again. Although she had been declared an habitual criminal, he, having regard to her age and the fact that she had kept free from trouble for 20 years, AvOuld grant probation for two years, subject to the condition that she lived at the Salvation Army home.
