FRANCE AND AMERICA
CO-OPERATION PLANNED M. LAVAL IN NEW YORK A WONDERFUL RECEPTION (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Received October 22, 10 a.in.) NEW YORK, Oct. 22. The Premier of France, M. Laval, arrived in the United States to-day to talk with President Hoover. New York gave him one of the greatest ovations in its history. Cheering thousands lined the banks of Battery Park, lire boats spouted, and guns at Fort Jay thundered At the City Hall, where M. Laval was escorted with the pomp New York displays for its heroes, lie said he came from a nation determined to cooperate with America to help restore prosperity. “A grave crisis had arisen which has interrupted your development as well as that of other countries in the world,” he said. ' “Torn with doubt, our two great democracies together must search for and apply methods which will restore calm and re-establish equilibrium.” M. Laval brought no fixed or definite programme. He is expected, however, to discuss several subjects that the French consider are more or less interwoven, yet in a sense separate. Among these are disarmament, economic recovery, the gold standard, inter-governmen-tal debts, national security, and cooperation among the nations, particularly France and the United States. It is generally understood that he does not expect to take back any definite agreement, on paper or otherwise, hut merely to thresh out with the President preliminaries looking towards co-operation on various subjects.
