The second three-weekly match of tho Nuhaka Defence Rifle Club was held on tho club’s range on Saturday last. The day was beautifully line, but the attendance was below tho average, tho majority of the members being busy preparing for shearing and other seasonal farming operations. The conditions of the mutch were, 10 shots and two sighlers at each of two ranges 500 yards and 600 yards. Scores: J. B. Monteatli (hdep. lo), 500yds 39, 600yds 57, total 86, first; J. Austin, sen. (ser.), 41, 42, 83, second; K. Stewart (10), 37, 36, 83, third; D. Hughes (20), 29, 33, 82. fourth; J. Peacocko (16), 38, 26, bo; A. W. J. Harvey (50), 25, 24, 79; J. Cooper (20), 27, 31, 78; T. Nepia (10), 38, 29, 77. Tlio next match will be held on Saturday, November 7, weather permitting, when the ranges will be 200 yards and 300 yards and tho conditions as usual, 10 shots and two sighters at each range, with the special condition; open sights will bo 'compulsory, and no apertures allowed. This was decided upon in order to give new members, and those who have not fitted aperture sights, an opportunity of competing under, service conditions with experienced members on more equal terms. A native living on the Mahia Peninsula made a determined attempt to take his life one day last week. First lie tried to split his, head with an axe, and inflicted some bad wounds, which, however. did not prove very serious, and finding this 1 method did not have the desired effect ho tlien made an attempt to cut his throat. Some neighbors secured him and kept him under control until the arrival of Constable Stanilaud from Nuhaka. The injured native was then placed on a sledge anti taken about 15 miles to Hie Mahia'homestead, where ho was accommodated for the night, it being too late to proceed further. Some time towards morning it was discovered that the man had made his escape. After considerable searching lie was discovered on top of a cliff at tlio beach. As soon as he saw the searchers approaching, he dived into the sea, but was rescued and taken to the Wairqa Hospital, where, on latest advice, he is reported to be progressing as, favorably as can be expected. A good deal of sickness is prevalent m the- district at present, - the complaints being principally- influenza of a severe type. One death has occurred, that of % young man named Reidy, which took place at the residence of his brother-in-law, Mr. 1). Peryer, at KopunwJmra. The deceased had been employed by Mr YV. H. Wilson at Opoutaina for some months, and was a very sociable and industrious young man. It is understood his parents reside in Gisborne. His sister, Mrs. Peryer, and a brothei are also reported to he seriously ill. ■Miss Ycliowlees, Wellington, is spending a holiday with Mrs. Moore at the Nuhaka Post Office.— Mrs. A.' N. S. Moore is reported to be the only successful local competitor in the Dairy ‘Produce Exporter (Tui’s Annual) photographic competition, in which she secured two prizes in the child life study • section —Miss M. Fames, Mrs. and Miss .Steed, and Mr. R- Steed,, jun., visited Hastings for the show. Mr. Hume, Dominion supervisor of herd testing, and Dr. Annett, of Hamilton, addressed a meeting of farmers at tho Nuhaka dairy factory’s office on Monday morning, when, despite tho short notice given of tlio changing of the'hour of the meeting, there was a very representative gathering of farmers present. Mr. Ilume stressed the 1 need for continued herd-testing us a means of detecting and eliminating those members of the various dairy herds which are not “paying their way,” and Dr. Annett dealt extensively with “Intensive Fanning” in a scientific manner. Tlio addresses were mainly on the lines of those delivered in Makaraka last Saturday evening, and reported freely in Monday's Herald. Mr. P. J. Brewster occupied the chair. A hearty vote of thanks to the lecturers for their instructive addresses was carried by acclamation.
