RETIREMENT OP INSPECTORS MR. D. E, LESLIE With all other inspectors who- have seen 40 years’ service, Mr. D. E. Leslie has received notice that he is to he relieved on superannuation after the grading of teachers in February next. Mr. ,T. Robertson, the Auckland senior inspector (formerly of Hawke’s Bay), and Mr. Colin Mutiro, of Auckland, have' received similar notices. Mr. 1). E. Leslie entered the education service ns a pupil teacher at the Main School, Napier, on February 1, 1889. Here lie received his inspiration and practical training from one of .the most brilliant teachers who have .worked in New Zealand, .the kte Mr. A. B. Thomson. Mr. .11. Hill, 8.A., {inspector of schools, sponsored all tho Hawke’s.Bay young teachers at that time; and year by year tested their four years’ training in the theoretical and practical knowledge of teaching. Training colleges had not then been established. Oh January 31, 1«39, he left Hawke’s Bay to take up the position of bead teacher of the grade 111, Reinvicktowu School, under the Marlborough Education Board, a position he held for nearly six years. Mr. Leslie rejoined the Ilawke’s Bay board us first assistant, of the Gisborne District High School on September 1, 1904. He refers to this period as a particularly happy one in his association with Mr. F. J. Rowlev, 8.A., headmaster, with the Poverty Bay branch of the Teachers’ Institute and with other outside “activities.” Eight years later, Mr. Leslie transferred to the position of first assistant master of the Masterton District High School under the Wellington Education Board. Director of the Masterton Technical School was his next appoint* mont, to be followed five years later by tlie headmastership of the grade VII, Terrace School, Wellington, Associated with the S.P.C.A. for some years, Mr. Leslie was chairman of the Wellington society at the time of his appontnient by the Education Department from the Terrace School to the inspectorate at Auckland on August 1, 1924. On his retirement in February; .1932, Mr. Leslie will have completed over 43 years’ service in the eauso of education in New Zealand. .
