FINANCIAL HELP REPAIRING NAPIER RESIDENCES Of 4000 odd houses at Napier over 2500 have been the subject of applications to the Earthquake Relief Committee for assistance in carrying out repairs, tho average cost being in the vicinity of £55. In addition, applications are still coming in from owners of houses who had carried out and paid for repairs before the announcement of the scheme whereby thev also could benefit up to £loo'. Applications from property owners for finance to carry out repairs up to £IOO number 2014, and there are an additional 60 which deal only with drainage. Of this number 1200 have been investigated, and 800 received payment. As there are a number of people who have carried out repairs and paid for them out of their own finances, they have been given the opportunity to participate in the relief funds. Applications sent (o the Reconstruction Department from this class, which closes at the end of this month, up to dale have been 150. It is probable that this number will be trebled, or more. Roughly speaking, out of 4023 houses at Napier, owners of 2524 will make application for assistance out of available funds. The average amount applied for is £55, the total amount based on these figures therefore being £138,820. This does not take into consideration the amount paid out by the Public Works Department for the erection of chimneys, which were carried out in the first month or so following the earthquake.
