ANTI-FASCISM
COMMUNIST PROPAGANDA MELBOURNE, July 4. During llio stay of Italian vessels in Australian waters efforts have been made to convert members of the crew to Communism. The practice has been for Italians, who are dominciled in Australia and who arc opposed to Fascism, together with Communist propagandists, to go on board, and by .'conversation and the distribution of Communist literature try to' undermine the belief of the crews in Fascism.
These activities having become known to the Italian authorities, prompt steps wero taken to prevent the vessels being used for anti-Fascist propaganda. On the arrival of the Italian motor-ship Viminalo at Melbourne this week, the sailor on duly at the, gangway refused to allow visitors, including the friends and- relatives of passengers, on board unless they were in possession of a pass issued either by the Italian Consulate or the agents for the vessel. It was stated that on the last voyage of the Viminale from Australia to Ilaly a quantity of Communist literature was found on the vessel when the ship reached Genoa. Two of the stewards were arrested, and after trial were imprisoned for having been in possession of Communist propaganda.
