LIGHT AEROPLANES

—*»- EVOLUTION OF TYPES PROGRESS OF AUCKLAND .CLUB "Easily the best Hying country club in Australia or New Zealand" was the description of the Auckland Aero Club given by Mr. B. Sheil, chief aviation officer of the Vacuum Oil Pty., Ltd., New Zealand, who has visited every aero club l'n Australia and the Dominion. The club, he said this week, was working 'along the right lines in developing the social side, for, after all, the principal objective of aero clubs was to develop the air-mindedness of the general public. \Vhile, from what he had seen since he had been in New Zealand, he thought it would probably be about or five years before any worthwhile commercial air lines would be operating, lie considered that the end of rthc depression would see a large increase in the number of private aircraft owners. This view was supported by the fact that a number of well-known British airplane manufacturers were putting into production new types of light machines, manufactured under mass-production conditions. "It is reported," he said, "that one of these airplanes will have comfortable cabin accommodation for two people, with a cruising speed of over KJO miles an hour, and low landing speed. It is expected to be marketed at from half tq two-thirds the price of the present-day type of light airplane, 'j'his anticipated demand for private machines will be assisted by the development of p'ay-as-you-iearn instruction, which is now being offered by aeroclubs throughout New Zealands." —Star.
