SUNDAY OBSERVANCE

CAMPAIGN IN BRITAIN EFFECT OF NEW BILL (British Official Wireless., Roc. 10 a.m, RUGBY, April 11. The Lord’s Day Observance Society announced that 0000 sermons are being preached throughout England in furtherance of the fight for Sunday. The campaign is. the result of the Government’s Sunday Entertainments Hill. Theatrical managers, on the other hand, state that it is grossly unfaii that theatres should be omitted from the bill.

Licenses und. r the Sunday Entertainments Hill will be granted On condition that the profits are paid to charitable objects approved by the council, ami that workers employed are not deprived of one day’s rest in a week.

The bill does .not give permission for stage plays.

Legal actions arising out of the seventeen;!) and eighteenth century Sunday Observance Acts are annulled. There is much newspaper comment, today on the text of the bill. The reception is not very cordial, as the provisions please neither the advocates of a “Brighter Sunday,” nor file supporters of stricter Sunday observance, but, as the Times remarks, backers of tho bill are entitled to claim that it does, nothing beyond legalising what lmd been accepted before the recent judicial decision based on a seventeenth century Act. The second reading will probably be taken on April 21, and an amendment to include permission to license stage plays is certain to be introduced. The Government’s intention is to allow the House of Commons a free vote on the bill.
