FUTURE OF A RAILWAY
THE TANGOWAHINE LINE “STAY OF PROCEEDINGS” The Mayor of Dargaville, Mr. F. A. Joiles, has received a report that a sum had been made to puli up the sleepers ana rails on tiie unbauasted portion of the railway between Tangowanmo at a point near VVlnuau, about four miles from Dargaville. The Mayor immediately communicated with the heauquarters of tne Public Works Department at Wlianguret protesting Dial ihu Minister of Public Works and the Prime Minister hucl promised that nothing would ne done til the matter until a personal investigation had been maue, and that theie would be a stay of pro ceedings until Lite result of tne investigation was to hand. The Mayor also telegraphed to Hie lit. Hon. J. G. Coates, member for the district, wllo has leplied as fallows:-—-“Have seen the Minister. Arrangements have been made to continue service (this refers to the TangowahmeKirikopuni section, which was to have stopped last Tuesday) and ballast line 'from Tangowahine to Edwin Harding’s property. " Minister’s reply to request of deputation which waited on actingPnine Minister in December last is to follow.”
The deputation asked that the line which had been formed and partly ballasted and railed to a point on the borough boundary should be finished to that point or a point about one mile toward Tangowahine at Awakino Point racecourse. The section between Wharau and the Awakino Point station site is already railed and ballasted. The ballasting and railing of the section between Tangowahine and Wharau will conned these two sections.
The Mayor is now hopeful that the request to the Minister will be acceded to and the line finished to one of the points mentioned. Should the line be finished to the borough boundary, the railhead will In* only a mile from the post office or to the Awakino Point station site two miles from the town. Under present conditions the town and district will lie quite satisfied if the line is finished to either of the sites mentioned and are satisfied that the returns would justify the completion in the near future of the remaining gap of one and a half miles to Dargaville and connecting lip with the 25 miles of the Kailiu line. —Auckland Herald.
