NAPIER'S FUTURE

REASON FOR OPTIMISM PROSPECTS REVIEWED (Per Press Association.) NAPIER, this day. The commissioner, Mr. J. S. Barton, S.M., said it was comforting to know that the port was functioning, thus ensuring Napier's future "success. As the railhead and ocean transport were centred at Napier it meant additional population, as the city was a jumping-off place for Wairoa, Gisborne, and laupo, and even beyond Dominion ports, the Government offices were to be rebuilt, and Napier's wonderful seafront had been improved by the quake. He could see mafiy grounds for optimism regarding Napier’s future. Mr. Barton said he had received offers "of trade federations to assist their brothers in Napier. This meant not only that Napier would he thoroughly rehabilitated, hut offers of assistance would prevent Napier business men from settling in other centres where competition might- even now he over-keen. Offers of help are to be. referred io the Rehabilitation Committee set. up under the Act.
