BUSINESS 0? COUNCIL A MODERATE AGENDA A moderate agenda was presented at the fortnightly meeting of the Gisborne Borough Gouiu'il. held last evening, there were present the .Mayor, Mr. I). \V. Coleman, Crs. ,). Pdair, 11. E. Mamie. J. \V. A. Holmes, S. V. Beaufoy, F. Collin, W. ,1. MacCihhon, W. Cave, and 11. il. DcCosla. ■ Wiiting to (he council as the local transport authority, .Mrs J. McGaviston complained that an opposition bus service was running between Gisborne and the bridge Hotel and charging fares below the stipulated scale. —The matter was referred to the' traffic inspector. Mr. T. W. Cochrane applied for per,mission to erect a mortuary on Ids property in Williams street. —The matter was referred to the Health Department. Mr. W. McKinnon applied for a water connection to his pig receiving yards at Makaraka, leased from Mr. 11. Moore. —The request was refused. The secretary of the Gisborne Fire Hoard. Mr. C. Blackburn, advised that, (lie amount duo by the council under the board's estimates for tbc ensuing year was £1241 10s, with a possible addition of £325 for plant which the ! board was considering purchasing.—The fetter was received. The i’ower Hoard advised that it bad been decided to remove the pole, at the corner of Roebuck and Childers roads, as requested, without prejudice to any right the board might have to recover any .portion of the cost.—The letter was received. REPORTS EXGIN HER 'S DEPARTS!ENT Street works.—Childers road, hotmix pavement from Stanley road* to Carnarvon street: Where necessary the old foundations were strengthened and a base course of hot-mix aggregate was laid to take a course of 21in. hotmix slab, local materials being used throughout, the job being finished off with a surface coat of Napier pea gravel. Hot-mix pavement, Haiti esplanade: The railway siding, Haiti esplanade, has been laid down with hot-mix as agreed upon with the Gisborne Sheepfarmers ’ Frozen Meat- and Mercantile Co., Ltd. Repairs where ifeeossary to existing liot-mix pavement have been carried out by British Pavements. Ltd., ns approved. “Unemployment relief works. — Aerodrome: The work of widening the landing area, on the northern side lias Ween completed. Macrae bath: The bath and buildings have been completed. Fencing and levelling of the grounds will be continued under scheme 5. Various works: In addition to the foregoing relief works, employment has been found for about 150 men under tlu* Unemployment Hoard's scheme No. 5. The works comprise cleaning up at the borough yard and at the sanitary depot, dismantling of buildings at Awapuni water reserve, reinstatement of earthquake damage at abattoirs, and work in connection with the hot-mix plant. Basketball grounds, Victoria Domain: The work of constructing two basketball grounds is now in hand, and good progress is being made. The work is being financed by the Basketball Association. “.Stormwater drainage loan works. — The laying of a stormwater drain in Eli ten o road on the north side from Harris street towards deLautour road has been continued. The laying of stormwater pipes in Childers road at each end of .Victoria Domain is now in hand.” WATERWORKS Reporting in connection with the waterworks, the engineer stated that the highest'gauge reading during the fortnight ended March MO was 120 lbs, and the lowest Snlbs. The top line was maintained in working order, there being one leak during the period. The quantity of water that passed through the meter for the weeks ended March 23 and MO was 5,490,000 and 5,4(50,000 gallons respectively. INSPECTION COMMITTEE The inspection committee’s report stated inter alia: “A visit was paid to the Macrae Baths, and the committee is of the opinion that Iho work should prove a very fine asset to the town. The engineer mentioned that, as hinds permit, further levelling of the ground, fencing, and general improvement will be carried out. “The committee is well pleased with the improvements effected on Childers road, particularly the Roebuck road intersection, where l,he corner hap been rounded off and a power pole moved hack, giving street traffic better visibility. The shoulders of the ‘hot-mix’ load are being formed up preparatory to levelling up each side of the road to protect "the new r work. “At Ihe basketball courts the foundations arc being laid in readiness to receive the ‘hoi-mix’ coat. When this work is completed the basketball association will have a very fine playing field for its members.” RESERVES COMMITTEE The reserves committee reported inler alia : “The use of Rntene road reserve as a training ground was considered, and i! was pointed out that this reserve was not altogether suitable for a training ground for cyclists, being mostly used as a childrens’ playing area. In view of the fact that one ground, Childers road reserve, in 'a central position, was already provided for this branch of sport, the committee decided that the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union be written to, asking them il they had availed themselves of the right to use this reserve. “The. question of landing charges at the aerodrome was discussed, and it was decided that the matter he held over in the meantime, pending information being received from Hastings, Hamilton, and Rotorua aero clubs, in reference to the scale of charges adopted by them for tile use of aerodromes and land ing grounds.” CITY BAND CONTROL The finance committee reported that the control of the City Band was discussed with the manager of the band, and it was resolved to recommend that the band should become an incorporated body under the Incorporated Societies Act', and. that the property of the hand should be vested in the corporate body as trustee for the Borough Council, that body, on request by the council, to take such action as was advisable for Hie recovery <>r protection of any of the
