BLACKBALL MINE TO CLOSE
EFFECT OF DISPUTE All the gear and material are being taken out of Ihe Blackball mine. When the pump is removed the mine will automatkally flood. The mine lias been idle since January 23, owingt to disputes, which several conferences have failed to settle. The company employed up to 270 men, paving about £4OOO in wages monthly. The company states that the men have known since the middle of January that the company would he forced io' abandon the mine unless a settlement was arrived at. Until last week, when its intentions were put into action, the men considered that the company was not serious in its threat to close the mine. At the request of business people in Blackball, the manager telephoned the general manager of the company in Wellington regarding making a final effort for settlement of the dispute. The general manager replied thai the eomranv was not prepared to enter on a further conference, hut had decided definitely to close down No, 9 dip.
