THE ADDRESS-IN-REPLY WAGE TAX ADVOCATED (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, last night. Resuming tho debate in the Legislative Council on the Address-in-Replv. the Hon. W. Earnshiuv said that never before bad there been such a difficult time as the present, and it was the duty of all to meet the necessities of the State. He believed that if the Government persisted in its endeavor to place an intolerable burden on the Workers, il would lead to convulsions, if not lo a revolution. Sir Francis Bell’s speech had come as a bombshell, but its arguments were unanswerable. The speaker favored a tax on wages, ile attacked the work of the Unemployment Board, and said that nothing but disaster could come from its policy. The Hon. G. Witty expressed surprise at the suggestion that there should be a tax on sugar, which was one of he necessities of life. He suggested lie doubling of the amusement tax, cho legalising of national sweeps on the lines of. Tasmania, the licensing of bookmakers, and the manufacture ot vliiskv in New Zealand. A lot of revenue could, be derived from these sources. Too much was being spent at jresent in luxuries. He also advocated lie manufacture of paper pulp in the dominion.
The debate was adjourned and Iho Council rose until Wednosdav.
