NO WINTER SHOW

ABANDONED THIS YEAR OBVIATING A BIG LOSS No Winter Show will be held in Gisborne this year in view of the possibility of a Tuig loss eventuating, A decision to this effect was reached by the committee of the Poverty Bay Winter Show Association last evening, the president, Mr. G. YV. Armstrong, being in the chair. There were aiso present, Mrs. M. Mawson, Rev. R. Hodgson, Messrs. J. C. Colley, T. G. Johns, H. Hopkinson, F. G. Murphy, C. JLegigett, N. H. Shaw, J. B. Greig, R. McCullough, and the secretary, Mr. W. M. Bayly. The committee was unanimous in reaching the decision, but it was evident that had the Garrison Hall still been standing there would have been no hesitation in going on with the show this year.

It was reported that in view of the . loss of the Garrison Hall, much expense would be entailed in putting the New Zealand .Shipping Co/s wool store iu Grey street m order for show purposes. This cost was estimated at £123, which included additional costs to those at the Garrison Hall that would have to be incurred in insurance, light ing, the provision of conveniences and cartage, the handling of the wool in the stores also being taken into account. Tn addition, it was reported that many of the firms in the town had decided that they could not bear the expense of making exhibits at this year’s show, and the loss of revenue in this respect was assessed at £7O. With the £123 additional cost incurred in making provision at the wool stores, the association would be out of pocket to the extent of £193.

This year’s takings were also expected to lie small if a show was held, for farm and garden produce sections were .not likely to receive anv great support in view of the d>-y spell leaving little produce on the farms and in the gardens. The show would he a very small one, indeed, it was claimed. The door takings, therefore were based on last year’s receipts, £193, which figure was less than half of the door takings at the previous show, when the total was £413. When all aspects were taken into account, it was believed that the association would lope about £2OO on this year’s effort if held in the wool stores, and the decision to abandon the show + his year was unanimous, although it was reached with great reluctance. A suggestion was made that a miniature show should be held in the Citv Hall, hut this found few supporters, and was not persisted in. It was decided to thank the subcommittee and all those who had spent their time giving'the association information with regard to possible new quarters.
