CYCLE ROAD RACE

WIN FOR F. WELLS FASTEST TIME TO HARRY DAVIS The eight miles cycle road race yesterday afternoon under the auspices of the Poverty Ray Professional Athletic and Dancing 'Club resulted as follows: F. Wells I, C, Davis 2, W. Lcgge 3. 'The weather was ideal, except that the riders had to face a head wind at one stage. 'Considerable interest was taken in the start, the roadside being lined with spectators. IJ. E. Davis was first off the mark, ' followed by Bishop, Lcgge and Priday. This bunch set a fast pace from the start, and for a while it appeared as though the winner must come from this section of the field. Herbert Davis, J. Watts and R. Sheppard followed closely. Harry Davis, the scratch man, left the mark lmin. 40sec. after Watts, and knowing he had a big distance to make up made the best of the followj ing wind on the way out. Although • he did not ride into a place, he easily made the fastest time, 24min. 50sec. On the run home, all riders were steadied by the head wind. Several were very fortunate iu not being involved in a serious collision when a stray bullock appeared among them. S. Priday fell, but remounted quickly. All riders were close up at the finish, only 400 yards separating the first and the last man. After a very hard struggle over the last 100 yards, F. Wells, who had ridden well ail the way, just managed to win from C. Davis by half a length, with Leggc 100 yards away, third. The rest of the field, comprising H. Davis, J. Watts, S. McCall, E. 11. Davis, R. Sheppard, and E. W. Davis, finished close up. Officials in charge of the event i showed efficient control, and all competitors were on the mark at the stipulated time. The next event, which will be held on March 12, will be over a 15 miles course from Childers road to the Bridge Hotel, and returning over the same route.
