A well-known Auckland business man, Mr. George Deane, manager for Messrs. Carmichael and Co., paper merchants, passed away this morning after a long and painful illness. Mr. Deane was greatly esteemed by the newspaper fraternity of the Dominion.

A Palmerston North Hospital bulletin states that tho following earthquake case has been admitted: Mrs Violet May Gardiner, from the showgrounds camp. The following have been discharged from hospital: Fred Wilson. Ken Outfield, and M. Redmond, all of Napier.— P.A.

A visitor to Gisborne at present is Professor Marshall Allan, Professor of Midwifery at Melbourne University. With so eminent a gentleman in our midst opportunity has been taken to arrange a lecture by the professor, and to-morrow afternoon lie will speak to a gathering of ladies at the Y.M.C.A..

The .jury empanelled to hear the charge of alleged perjury against Eric F. McKay, in the Supreme Court, returned at 3.40 this afternoon, and announced its inability to agree on a verdict. The case was set down for re-trial at the next sessions at Gisborne, and hail was allowed as before.

During his brief visit to Wellington on Tuesday, Mr. W. D. Lysnar, M.l’., took up with the available members of Cabinet questions relating to the rehabilitation of Wairoa, and lie received an assurance that in addition to the bridge and road inspecting engineer who had been detailed to make an inspection of the road communications and of the Wairoa bridge, an officer of the Public Works Department would lie dispatched to work in conjunction with the Wairoa Borough Council in relation to the restoration of buildings. Tins officer, Mr. Lvsnar stated to-day, would have the authority of the council behind him, and would indicate what had to he done in the way of demolition of unsafe structures, and what remaining portions of partially-demolished buildings could he. incorporated in the restoration work. The further grant of £250 made from the central relief fund for use in Wairoa had brought the total allocation for that centre to £450, Mr. Lysnar mentioned, a sum or £2OO having been made available earlier, but this sum was not necessarily to be regarded as the limit of the relief available for Wairoa sufferers from the Prime Minister’s fund.

Mr. W. 1). Lysnar, M.P., made a quick journey to Wellington and back, via Rotorua, during the past three days. Hi’ left Gisborne oil Monday morning, and by Tuesday morning was in Wellington. He spent the day visiting the offices of various Ministers on district business, and took the evening train for flie North, arriving at Rotorua at midday yesterday. By courtesy of the White Btav service, he was able to leave Rotorua at 1 o’clock in the afternoon, and by 10 o’clock was in disborne again. The traffic on the north route is very heaVy, Mr. Lysnar commented to-day, many people preferring to take the longer route, via Rotorua, to Wellington rather than the chance of being delayed between Gisborne and Napier by rain. On Monday the passage of the Motu-Opo-tiki road was made in driving rain, the effect of which was seen in a number of slips on the road. Some big trees wore brought down by these slips, and a large number of men were at work clearing the route of the debris. The vigilance shown by tlie Public WoVks Department ill keeping the road open was praised by Mr. Lysnar, who remarked that if the northern outlet was closed through heavy slips, the isolation of Gisborne would be complete!
