CONTROL OF RELIEF

CONSERVATION OF FUNDS MANY CLAIMS TO BE MET fPnr Prf»s« Afa«nrfat!<vn ) WELLINGTON, last night. Several meetings of the sub-com-mittee of the central executive setup to administer the earthquake relief funds have recently been held. The Prime Minister stated this evening that in view of the limited amount of the funds and the numerous and heavy claims against them, ho had drawn the attention of the local committees to the great necessity for economy in the purchase of stores and the granting of relief generally.

Major-General Young is investigating the use of camps at Palmerston North with a view to seeing how much longer they need be used and is effecting economies. He is also authorised to arrange for the more equitable distribution of refugees and direct their removal to other towns.

Payments for travel will be limited to persons returning direct to their homes or moving under the direction of General Young.
