GREAT SUCCESS OF WAIROA A. & P. SHOW

HIGH QUALITY OF THE STOCK PRAISED

BY JUDGES

A LARGE ATTENDANCE FAVORED BY FINE WEATHER VERY EFFICIENT ORGANISATION.

(Herald Special Reporter)

* WAIROA, tjiis (lay. Greater success could hardly have been anticipated by the Wairoa County A. and P. Society in respect of its annual Show, held yesterday on its ideallysituated ground on the Ruataniwha road. With the entries exceeded only once in the history of the society and a variety of attractions promised, the public of Wairoa and district turned out in large numbers, and, although early in the day it was feared that there would be a large decrease in the attend lance, the afternoon crowds from town brought the total number of people on the grounds up to most satisfactory proportions, the result being that the gate takings ( fell only slightly. I A grey sky and a strong wind kept '■ the atmosphere pool, ami the day was I a mucli more pleasant one than that 1 experienced by Tuesday's race crowd, j A threat of rain was in the shy, j hut this did not deter the public from making (heir appearance on the ground. Those of the farming ~,,m-. . inunify welcomed the moisture-laden I clouds, and, when word was excitcd- ■ ly passed around thai heavy rain had I been reported behind the hills, already ! smiling faces literally beamed. The j whole district needed rain, and whe- : t.her ij cuiie on Show day or not it t would be welcome. No rain fell dur- !' ilig the progress of the Shew, howlever, but set in towards evening. EFFICIENT ORGANISATION The absence of the previous day's scorching sun, and the presence of' a ' Strong wind, .reaching almost gale i force dl times, must have been appreciated immensely by the stock. In | any case, however,' the stock would have suffered little, for the pens were situated under shady willows, while the pies, which we're in a slightly more exposed position, had been accommodated with a covering of hessian, | Tim foresight of the committee in making adequate provision for the stock was only one instance of the efficiency of the organisation, winch has been soundly built up by each successive committee over'a number of years. Ail possible was dime for the comfort of the .public, as well as allowing plenty of scope for all officials 1o cany out their duties efficiently. Judging commenced early, and every effort was made to have the exhibits ticketed for the insp Men of the public before the day was far advanced, while most efficient arrangements were made for allowing the press to secure the results at the earliest possible moment. ; The most attention, as usual, was centred in the jumping competitions, and the public showed its appreeia- ; turn of the efforts id' fine steeds and j efficient riders by their generous rounds of applause. Some of the ring _ exhibitions were particularly j pleasing, and were well up to the standard usually seen in tin- Gisborno and Hawke's Hay districts. ' SMALL GATE DECREASE The parade of prize winners attract- • eil the usual attention, lfi draughthorses and .10 hacks and harness I horses taking part. None of the other slock was included, as past exj perionre demonstrated that a certain j, amount of risk was attached to allow- '] ing cattle, especially those from backj country stations, to' take part. Some j of these animals gave trouble at pen- ! ning lime this year, and no doubt the j committee was wise in excluding them I from the parade. The band headed • j the parade, and also dispensed a lively programme of music during the day. A party of Hoy Scouts was present on the grounds doing gratutious service as runner boys for the society. Their assistance proved most valuable, and saved the time of stewards, who were allowed to proceed with important woilc. while the scouts delivered messages whore required. The gate takings showed a reduction of £44 on the total for last year, but when the ruling conditions .are, taken ino consideration the manner iuj which the public supported the Show is very gratifying, and the committee' is very pleased at the result. - I Every effort, to make visitors to the show feel a warmth of welcome was made by Mr. Tom. Pavey, president of the association, ami an efficient staff under Mr. A. 11. I'nwiu, secro-j tary. carried on the office work wit h smoothness and dispatch. The staff of stewards was a strong and efficient! one, and the judges' requirements were met at every turn, as also were the inquiries and requests of the pub- ' lie THE JUDGES The list of judges was as nude)':— Horses.—Draughts: Mr. A. ,1. EXHIBITS REVIEWED COMMENTS BY JUDGE Little else, was heard from Hie judges of the various classes than high praise for the quality of the, stock of the distinct, as represented at the Show, and some commented on the improvement of the stock since their last visits. Condition was lacking in nearly every instance, however, but this was due entirely to weather conditions. DAIRY JUDGE IMPRESSED The dairy stock shown, and judged Ivy Mr. H. C. Sampson, of New Plymouth, impressed the. visitor as quite a good lot, though of course hardly up' to tho standards of Taranaki, the, home of tho dairy industry. After completing the judging of the dairy classes, Mr. Sampson aeced.ed to the, requests of keenly interested farmers, and gave a short address in the ring, pointing out the defects and tho good points of the respective beasts within easy range. His remarks were followed with the closest

interest, especially that portion in which he described what lie considered to be the perfect type of dairy cow. Mr. Sampson mentioned to a pressman later that some of the dairymen were, evidently short of experience in breeding, but' that they had some nice beasts. Experience in breeding could only come with long practice, he pointed out, and it was only natural to find that mistakes had been made in a district, so lately developed as a dairy centre. Breeding was a specialised portion of the industry, in which the only way to learn was to profit by one's own mistakes. The main point, was to know the right lines tn I reed from for milk production. In his judging, .Mr. Sampson paid a lot of attention to the milk vessels of the exhibits, and in many instances the condition of the beasts in this respect decided the awards, other points being equal. IMPROVED HEREFORDS The large numbers of station cattle. particularly in the Hereford division, pleased the judge. Mr. J. M. Jomes, of Masterton. who also commented enthusiastically on the great quality of the exhibits. Both in numbers and in quality, he saw a great improvement since he last judged at Wairoa three or four vears ago. On the last occasion he was rather disappointed with the class of Herefords before him. but the offering yesterday was a credit to the district.' Of course, the stock showed the effects-of the season, but had the season been favorable there was little doubt that the condition of the beasts would have keen most creditable. In the Herefords. the champion cow was quite an outstanding animal. The three yearling heifers made a good showing, but the others were backward in condition as a result of the seasonal conditions. The reserve champion bull should later make a fine animal. The Polled Angus division did not provide the. same good competition as in the Herefords. and the rrnality did not come up to that standard either, while he was disappointed that there were no entries among the Shorthorn. GOOD FAT STOCK Mr. C. E. Twist, of Greenmeadows, Napier, saw the fat stock showing the results of the dry weather, but the sheep and lambs made a fine showing, although in some instances they were lacking in condition. However, their quality was quite in keeping with those at other shows he had attended. The cattle were also showing the effects of the season, and no doubt the numbers of entries would have been considerably larger had the season been more favorable, and considering the conditions, the whole fat stock section, both sheep and cattle, was very good indeed. He thought it a pi'tv that in such a fine district farmers did not. support the show more, but he had no doubt that when conditions improved the entries would be a great fleal larger. SHEEP AND WOOL A lack of finish with little show condition was noticed bv Mr. L. R. Wilton, or Masterton. the judge of the stud sheep. The weather was no doubt responsible for this stale, of affairs, and otherwise the sheep were of very fair quality. In view of the dry spell, the wool did not have, quite the bloom as in an ordinary season. The Lincolns produced only a small entry, but the Romneys were a good selection, and proved the strongest of the stud sheep section. The, aged ram and Hie two-tooth ram in the Romneys were the outstanding animals in the exhibition, and showed better condition and better get-up than any others, due possibly to better feeding.

but regretted that some of the classes did not, attract, greater numbers, although, he was told, the dog entries were a record for Wairoa. The foxterriers proved the, best of the breeds that came under his notice, while among the spaniels, the. winning black cocker was outstanding.

Large entries in the working collie classes were commented on most favorably by Mr. L. Lopdell. of Napier, who said the class of dog he was called upon to judge made quite a good selection. He was pleased tn see such large numbers, and the quality before him led him to believe that the Wairoa breeders were working on the right lines. The champion working collie, chosen from the smooth haired class, was a splendid type fit to take its place in the prize list of any show.

As was to be expected, none of the fleece wool was up to the usual standard, and the judge. Mr. W. Tucker, of Whnfcatu. Hastings, commented on this point, lie said the winning fleece was a fair average one of good yielding quality and a good (lass of litre: carrying little condition, it. should yield 76 per cent, clean wood when scoured. The second award was for quite a good fleece. which, however, was not showing so much quality and character as the winning fleece, while the yield was not quite so good. The .other ticketed exhibit earned third place on account of its great weight and selling value ; the ouality was fair. The other fleeces were below the standard, required for show purposes, except, two. which arrived too bite for judgiing; these would most likely have been in the prize list had they arrived in time. HORSES THAT PLEASED

"f must say 1 was surprised to find such i lasses here as 1 saw to-day." remarked Mr. W. IT. Gaisford. who judged the hack ami competition classes. Numerically and in point of quality, be stated, the classes were strong, particularly the maiden hacks and the maiden' hunters. The latter showed almost as good form over the jumps as be saw inter in the open hunter's jump, and a number of the maidens actually competed in the latter class with credit. Taking the hack classes aLI over, they were better than one would expect, to find at the smaller shows, and should compare well with those at many of the more important A. and P. fixtures. Mr. Gaisford praised very highlv the champion hack. W Torbett's Sylvia King, which he said was good looking and even heller to ride than to look at. The jumping showed the benefit of having an active hunt club in the district, while in this age of motor.cars, if was pleasing to notice the interest in the children's riding section. While the yountner generation could lie interested in horses, the standard of riding and horseflesh would not deteriorate, lie thought. Discussing the draught clasres. Mr. A. ,f. Tnrnbull staled'that the smallness of the classes robbed the competition of some of its interest, hit on the whole, the exhibits were fair. The dry mares were the best class of the sec lion, he commented, some of the entries in other classes not' being no to show standard, in regard to condition.

POOR, FRUIT AND VEGETABLES "I have never seen a worse exhibition," said. Mr. J. H. Apedaile. of Wairoa. who made the awards in the fruit, and vegetable classes. He said he had been judging these divisions at the Wairoa Show for the past. 15 or 16 .wars, and the weather conditions this season were so had right, throughout that little belter could have been expected. The early part of the season was backward, ' and the following dry weather had spelt ruin to the gardens and orchards. Most of the fruit was small, and much of it had fallen from the trees. Many of the apples and plums exhibited were hardly worth while bringing into the Show, whereas there was usuallv a fine exhibition at Wairoa. The vegetables, too, were a poor selection. As an instance of the large decrease in the entries. Mr. Apedaile said thai whereas the potato class usually attracted from 16 In 20 entries, there were only two yesterday. DOGS AND RABBITS Both dog judges commented very favorably on the quality of the animals bofore them. Mr. H. Hindi! iff e, of Wellington, who judged all but the working sheep dogs, expressed his pleasure at the specimens in his division,

Grass tires have been of almost daily occurrence at Waipuktirau during the continued dry spell.

The rabbits provided a very fair class, according to the judge, Mr, T. H. Stewart. The winning Angora buck was a good rabbit in fair condition, but. kicked bead fur. The best Angora doe had good fur except on the head, wheie it was lacking; the second Angora doe, was very close to the winner. The Chinchilla buck was the best of its class, while the Chinchilla doe was a good animal, with very dense fur. AWARDS SHEEP LINCOLN Rain bshear or over (3 entries): T. .Pavey 1 and. 2, E. Lane 3.
