WAIROA NEWS

(Herald Correspondent.) A number of Wairoa households and business people were greatly inconvenienced bv the fact that power was suddenly cut off early on Tuesday morning. It lias since transpired that the cause was the snapping of a wire at one of the insulators near Whakamarino lake starling a small scrub tire. An unrehearsed performance took place on the Wairoa bridge on Tuesday which afforded some free amusement for passers-by. A side-show man, who evidently knew bow to do the trick, climbed to the top of one of the curve* arches of the Wairoa bridge and jumped off into the river, looping the loo]) several times as he did so. making a neat entry. A visitor to the races, in a spirit of bravado, essayed the trick also, but made a bad job of it, landing with a great thud on his back and so tearing his clothing that new habiliments became a necessity. He scrambled out a wiser man, declaring that he would not attempt it again for a fortune. The total height was between 30 and 40ft., nothing, of course, to a good diver. At the Show there was, for exhibition only, a child's doll the bonnet for which was made of Angora wool bred, grown. spun and made up in Wairoa by Mr. Saville, of Frasertown road, the old spinning wheel of days gone by being employed for spinning the wool.
