THE MILLER STARS fa HAPARA DETAIN TROPHY Tit® Second match for the. Miller Stars w;ls played on To Hapara Lawn Tennis Club's courts yesterday afternoon, when F. G. Sharp "and F. Stevenson, of Te Hapara, retained the trophy against H. L. Clare and T. J. Simmonds, of the Gisborne club, the former obtaining an outright victory, winning all three sets. Stevenson (owb 15) and Clare (sCr.) provided some bright tennis. In the eSi-lv stages, Clare’s sideline and swinging backhand shots frequently left Stevenson standing. However, careful plaV on Stevenson’s part led Clare into ertors, and the latter lost liis early lead Clare prejudiced his-chances on several occasions through faulty footwork and stopping Shots that would otherwise have obviously landed out. Stevenson drew level with his opponent at 5-all, and thereafter the issue was never in doubt, the Te Hapara player winning, 9-—6* ~. ■ The match between Sharp and Simmonds on level terms wias very open, with the veteran’s courtcraft offset- by his opponent’s brute force and ngUity. Simmond’s drew first blood, but Shai| retaliated with three m succession.
