The Rev. W. C. Wood and Miss Wood, of the Vicarage, Papakura, will leave early in the new year for Gisborne to attend the wedding of Mr. Sclwyn Wood. Miss D. Olsen, Gisborne, is spending her annual vacation with her father and sister, Mr Andrew Olsen and Miss Olsen, Norscwood. Mr and Mrs Lowe and family, of Martinborough, have returned from a tour of the Gisborne district.

Mrs Wilson, widow of Dr. Wilson, who perished in -Scott’s Antarctic Expedition in January, 1912, left England on December 18 for a visit to New Zealand.

Miss Stella Murray will leave New Zealand on January 8 for Australia, where she will visit Madame Melba before returning to England. Mrs Forbes, Lady Sidey, Mrs Berondsen, Mrs and Miss Craig, Mrs Marsden, Lady Wilford and Miss Wilford were among the guests at an At Home given by Lady Parmoor _in honor of the ladies of the delegation to the Imperial Conference. Viscountess Craigavon has been addressing several Ulster audiences lately and has on several occasions given an account- of her tour of New Zealand.

There are many New Zealand friends who will sympathise with Lady Rutherford who is now visiting her mother, Mrs Newton, Christchurch, and with her husband, Sir Ernest Rutherford, in the loss of their only child, Mrs Eileen Fowler, whose death occurred suddenly on Christmas Eve at her home in Cambridge. England. Mrs Fowler, who was born in Canada, was married in 1921 to Mr. R. H. Fowler, M.A.. 0.8. E., F.R.S. She leaves a family of four children. Her husband is a Fellow of Trinity College. Cambridge, and lecturer on mathematics. Since 1928. ho has been Stokes Lecturer in the University of Cambridge. On the Lawn at Ellerslie,

The lawn at Ellcrslie presented a brilliant spectacle on Saturday when the first meeting of the Auckland Racing Club’s summer carnival was held. Seldom have the fashions been more attractive. AIJ featured the 1 long, graceful, flowing lines that are the latest decree, and the colours ran the gamut of all the delightful pastel shades. Floral chiffons were much favored, and the models displayed showed delightful flares, smart little coatees, flowing sleeve draperies and tumbling cascades of color. In many cases the hems of the gowns nearly swept the ground, and a charming picture was provided as groups of. wearers of these styles clustered together in the shade of tho fino old trees that line the lawns. Tho weather was beautiful for such a gathering of style, and fashion quite satisfied the long-felt desire of the feminine world to parade the frills and furbelows of their choice. A Gift Tea

The small reception room at the Ritz tearooms housed a delightful little party on, Tuesday afternoon, when some friends of Miss Tlonnor, England, tendered her a bathroom gift tea. Miss Monitor leaves Gisborne ■for Australia early in January to be married to Captain J. B. Williams, of the mercantile marine, and her intimates felt they could not let her go without a tangible expression of their good wishes for her happiness. Tho room looked very pretty with one long table blooming with mauve and blue sweet peas and' bowls of mauve hydrangea, a decorative note repeated on the flower stands about the room. Two appropriately-decorated cakes brought a smile to the faco of the principal guest, for one, iced in white, supported a* daintily-clad little bride,.and the other had a sea captain bestriding his ship. There was an amusing competition, “celebrities,” and then Miss Ilonnor displayed a selection of charming gifts.; ’ Miss Tlonnor was modishly gowned in a Malct green two-piece suit worn with a white satin tuck-in blouse and a green beret and green shoes. A 'Tennis' Tea ; ’ Ypry charmingly arranged was the afternoon given by Mrs W. J. -MeItdowie, Totangi..Ngatapa, to,Miss.N, Puflett on Saturday last.

On arrival the guests were served With cooling drinks’and ices, and then a number repaired to the tennis courts, while others yielded to the fascinations of a devoriy-laid-out lilliputian, gblf .course. Tea was served informally in the, drawing-room, dining-room aiul on the, verandahs, they drawing;; room bping artistically decorated with many roses and .sweet- peas, while in the diningroom the ever beautiful Iceland poppy made a splash of color. Mrs Mclldowie wore a delightful frock of floral georgette in rich nasturtium shades, and crowned her dark hair, with a' becoming bangltojt hat to tone.

Hiss Nancy Puflett was in a dainty tennis frock of eggshell white erepo de chine and a white felt hat.

Boxing Day saw a delightful party given bv Mrs. T. S. Williams. ■‘Kaharua.” Ruatoria. The large garage was literally lined with greenery interspersed with rainbow streamers, and silver tinsel and glittering silver powder scattered! on walls and ceiling gave the effect of / snow. In the centre stood a magnificent Christmas tree blazing with fairy lights and glittering with shiny baubles, its branches weighed down with lovely gifts, which were distributed by a merry Father Christmas. Then there were paper hats, noisy squeakers and jolly balloons with which to make merry. Mrs. Williams was prettily frocked in duo toned crepe de nliine with a ltlivy background, and a jabot and collar of white crepe do chine were charming. Among the adults present were Mr. and Mrs. 11. E. Williams, Mr. and Mrs. 0. T. Williams, Mr. and Mrs. G K. Williams, Mr. and Mrs. 11. Burnett; Mesdnmes W. Maclaurin and It. Kemp; Misses N. Maclaurin, Smith, Anne- Williams, Margot Williams, Brenda Ludbrook, Barbara Heath, Peggy Burnett, G. and B.i Kemp, Tony and Colin Williams and Maurice and Kenneth Williams.

Wedding : Hamilton—Ellmers A pretty wedding took place on Christmas Eve at. the Presbyterian Church, Gisborne, when Mona Eileen, -third daughter of Mrs Ellmers, 'Wellington street, and the late> Mr E. Ellmers, gave her hand into the keeping of Eric, third son of Mr and Airs T. Hamilton, Patutahi. The Rev. Janies Aitkeii, AI.A., officiated at the ceremony.

Tho bride, who was escorted to tho altar by her brother, Air Game Ellmers, was. exquisitely frocked in ivory satin, ankle length, the skirt being very much flared and aglint with silver broideries, while her veil of filmy white net was bordered with iace -and bound to her head with a wr6a-th of orange blossoms. Ivory hose and shoes were worn, and a lovely 'bouquet of white roses and pale pink carnations mingled with delicate fern and tied with satin streamers added to 'the charm of a dainty bridal toilette. Miss Vorbna Ellmers acted as -bridesmaid, wearing deep lemon georgette artistically trimmed with mauve and pink, and having godets of lemon silk net. A modish summer felt in lemon tones and hosiery on suite were worn, while a bouquet repeating the color note of the gown was carried. Mr, Harvey Hamilton, brother of the bridegroom, was best- man. Tho reception was held at the homo of the bride’s sister, Airs -R. lloulahan, who received the guests, in a ■gown of carnation • pink georgette, fashionably designed. ’Airs Elllncrs was in black satin,' prettily draped, and rehev,e.d with ,a soft white satin jabot. Airs Hamilton wore dark blue crepe do chine, with a flared skint and softly-pouched .bodice. The bride’s going away costume was a patterned bluo and lemon mylesta, worn beneath-ft Havana brown corded silk cofft, ; and a I‘emon felt hat in the new oft'-tho-forohead shape.
