BOROUGH WATER SHORTAGE
(To the Editor of the Herald.) Sir, —The prohibition by the borough authorities of the use of hoses for watering gardens, etc., owing to water shortage is somewhat arbitrary and stupid when it is remembered that the chief wastage of water occurs in the washing down of motor cars during. the dusty weather, and chiefly by visitors to the town. I happened to be in a garage on Monday and observed a youth washing down a car, and the wanton waste of water in the process was deserving of strong censure, which I was unable to give and which did not seem to concern the proprietor. T suppose the same wastage goes on in every garage in town and is not charged for by meter, and in private garages, where car owners like to keep their cars spick and span. I know one man in my neighborhood who washes his car down on everv occnsion after he has been out. All this polishing up of cars by people when there is a shortage of water is ouite unnecessary a dry mg would be iust as serviceable. Vet such is the iuStice of the edict from the Mavor that the working man with a small garden plot "striving to produce vegetables, etc.. Tor his own consumption has to cio slow with the water while the -ar-owner and pleasure seeker can let 'the tan or hose run on his motor car without, prohibition. T think if anyone were nroscmted for using their hose on gardens they could plead the unreasonMen os* of the bv-law. Why not make the prohibition equal and really effective for the conservation of wnt°r for necessary purposes. Mr. Mayor?-—Yours, etc., WATNTJI.
